The term 'glaucoma' encompasses a group of diseases that result in a progressive optic neuropathy that causes characteristic changes in the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fibre layer. Due to the ageing population, it is predicted that there will be a large increase in the prevalence of glaucoma over the next decade, but currently roughly half of all cases go undetected.

This programme outlines the key facts about glaucoma, with expert advice on investigation, management and appropriate referral from specialist optometrists Dr Robert Harper and John Tickner, and ophthalmologist Leon Au.
