Episode 2 – Papilloedema

In this 25 min audio programme we hear about a real life clinical scenario where papilloedema was detected in a young girl by a community optometrist. Michelle Hanratty then discusses the topic of papilloedema, its presentation, causes and potential treatment with consultant neuro-ophthalmologist Naz Raoof. The discussion considers the differential diagnoses of papilloedema and includes advice on how to approach the difficult task of communicating information about the condition to patients.

Learning objectives

1.1.1 To be able to elicit the detail and relevance of any significant symptoms relating to papilloedema.

1.1.3 Identifies and responds appropriately to patients’ fears, anxieties, and concerns about papilloedema in relation to their visual and general welfare.

3.1.3 To understand the use the of indirect ophthalmoscopy and OCT in the identification of optic nerve head features that indicate papilloedema.

6.1.2 To be able to interpret and investigate the presenting symptoms of a patient with suspect papilloedema.

6.1.3 To be able to develop a management plan within a primary care setting for the investigation of a patient with suspect papilloedema and interprets the results.
