Welcome to Docet’s podcast Sound Optometry, hosted by Michelle Hanratty, an IP optometrist with 20 years’ experience on the high street and in hospital. Each month, with case studies and in-depth conversations, we will be exploring topics that matter the most to you as optometrists and are relevant for everyday practice.

Episode 32 - Managing myopia: Now and for the future

Myopia is a growing concern worldwide and the optometry profession has the opportunity to both improve the sight of myopic patients and to potentially prevent myopia-related ocular disease.

The podcast starts with a conversation between host Michelle Hanratty and her friend Kathryn, where the impact of high myopia on lifestyle and ocular health is brought sharply into focus.

We then hear from Kathryn Webber, BCLA Myopia Management Practitioner of the Year, about the updated College of Optometrists guidance and the advances made in our understanding of myopia management from recent research. Michelle then explores myopia management using spectacle lenses, with Kathryn explaining how she manages patients in her clinic and the importance of communicating well with both parent and child.

The episode concludes with a parent of highly myopic children describing her personal experience so far. We hear of her hopes and fears for the future, highlighting the important role that optometrists can play in preventing myopic disease.

An additional reading element consolidates the learning on this topic.
