Sound Optometry

Domains: Communication, Clinical Practice

Welcome to Sound Optometry, a podcast from Docet hosted by Michelle Hanratty, an IP optometrist with over 20 years’ experience in both high street and hospital settings. Each month, through case studies and in-depth conversations, we explore the topics that matter most to you as an optometrist and are relevant to everyday practice.

Episode 52 – Brain Tumours, Part 2: Red flags for referral

Around one-third of people affected by a brain tumour report visual problems, making optometrists well-placed to detect suspicious signs and refer patients for further investigation. However, brain tumours can also present with a variety of non-visual signs and symptoms. As the incidence of brain tumours is increasing in the UK due to the ageing population, optometrists should have an awareness of these other symptoms that may raise the index of suspicion.

In the second of two episodes on brain tumours and neuro-ophthalmology, Michelle Hanratty speaks to Lorcan Butler, an optometrist who works for the Brain Tumour Charity. In his role, Mr Butler educates eyecare practitioners around the UK so that they can be better prepared when faced with a patient that has suspicious neuro-ophthalmological signs or symptoms.

We also hear stories from brain tumour patient Connor McCann (Episode 51) and idiopathic intracranial hypertension patient Shannen Brodrick (Episode 9), as well as communication tips from ophthalmologist Dr Naz Raoof (Episode 2).

An additional reading element consolidates the learning on this topic.
