This programme, part of the Ageing Eye series, looks at the communication challenges that optometrists may face when examining older patients. It presents three patient cases for discussion led by a group of experts.

The experts provide key information and facts on each case to highlight good communication and expert tips on how to examine and relate to older patients. The course provides guidance on the challenges in communication that optometrists may face with older patients and strategies that can be used by optometrists to improve their services to older patients.

    s.2 Communicate effectively with patients

    • Able to take a relevant history and symptoms from older patients.
    • Understands the concerns and anxieties that older patients may have when undergoing an eye examination and to be able to adapt style and communication accordingly.
    • Able to communicate effectively with older patients with cognitive impairment and those who may be easily confused.

    • Knowledge of the additional clinical and social needs for some older people and how to deal with them in an appropriate manner.

    s.13 Show respect and fairness to others and do not discriminate
