This programme presents 3 older patient cases for discussion by a group of experts, it is part of the Ageing Eye series and is supported by a range of reference materials.

The experts provide key information and facts on each case to highlight good communication and expert tips on how to examine and relate to older patients. The course provides guidance on the challenges in communication that optometrists may face with older patients and strategies that can be used by optometrists to improve their services to older patients.

    Learning objectives

    • 1.1.1 To improve the taking of relevant history and symptoms from older patients.
    • 1.1.3 To improve the understanding of the concerns and anxieties that older patients may have when undergoing an eye examination and to be able to adapt style and communication accordingly.
    • 1.2.2 To improve the communication with older patients with cognitive impairment and those who may be easily confused.
    • 2.13.8 To improve the understanding of the additional clinical and social needs for some older people and how to deal with them in an appropriate manner.
    • 7.1.6 To improve the understanding of some of the adaptations needed when examining older patients with cognitive and other disabilities.
      Unit 1 - Introduction (~4 mins)
