In this session delegates are asked to watch a short video that outlines a case scenario of a 60-year-old patient who suffered a stroke 2 months ago. The discussion will then be based around: 

  • The adaptions Ray will have to make to his lifestyle and his ability to cope with everyday tasks
  • The physical and emotional challenges Ray faces and how to help with these issues
  • What visual aids would be best suited to meet Ray’s needs.

    • 1.2.3 To be able to recognise when a patient is anxious and respond appropriately to their concerns and fears by adapting your communication style.
    • 2.2.1 Understands the additional social needs of severely sight impaired patients and considers options available locally. Understands benefits of certification and can discuss this with patients to ensure they are accessing the help available. 
    • 4.2.1 To explore the level of magnification used for reading tasks and advise on their suitability and alternative options.
    • 4.2.2 To explore possible digital and electronic aids for the visually impaired, including Apps and Bluetooth devices.
    • 7.1.6 To understand visual field loss in stroke patients and the impact of possible visual field defects on patient mobility and examination technique.
