In this episode, Michelle delves into the reasons why retinal detachment is a leading cause of complaint to the General Optical Council’s (GOC) Fitness to Practice committee. She is joined by Stephen Lash, Consultant Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon, who provides some clinical pearls to help the optometrist when a posterior vitreous or retinal detachment is suspected. Contributing to this discussion is Roshni Kanabar, Clinical and Regulatory Advisor for the Association of Optometrists (AOP), who gives essential tips on patient communication and record keeping.

Learning objectives

1.1.1 To be able to elicit the detail and relevance of any significant symptoms relating to retinal detachment.

2.7.2 Provide or arrange further investigations, advice or treatment for patients presenting with signs of retinal detachment in a timescale that does not compromise patient safety and care.

2.8.2.5 To record adequate details of any investigation, treatment, referral, or advice you provided regarding flashes, floaters and the potential risk of visual loss with retinal detachment.

6.1.12 Evaluates and manages patients presenting with symptoms of retinal detachment.
