Welcome to Sound Optometry, a podcast from Docet hosted by Michelle Hanratty, an IP optometrist with over 20 years’ experience in both high street and hospital settings. Each month, through case studies and in-depth conversations, we explore the topics that matter most to you as an optometrist and are relevant to everyday practice.
Episode 53 – Periorbital skin disorders: What’s an optometrist to do?
According to NHS England, approximately half of the UK population will experience a skin condition within any 12-month period. As optometrists, we are sometimes required to manage the ocular manifestations of conditions such as atopic eczema and rosacea. In some cases, patients may seek our advice when the eyelids or surrounding skin become affected.
In this episode of Sound Optometry, dermatologist Dr Bryan Murphy, who practices in Northern Ireland, joins Michelle Hanratty to discuss the wide range of skin conditions that may present in community practice. He also outlines when optometrists can offer therapeutic relief and when referral is most appropriate.
An additional reading element consolidates the learning on this topic.
