Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common form of macular degeneration in the UK, affecting more than 600,000 people. 

This five-part series on AMD covers the condition from physiology, pathology and classification through to assessment, management, referral and treatment.  

Part four presents three patient cases at varying stages of AMD, providing optometrists an opportunity to refine diagnostic skills and evaluate appropriate management and treatment options for each scenario. Each case incorporates presenting symptoms and relevant investigations, including the interpretation of fundus images and OCT scans. 

A series of exercises is provided to guide clinical decision-making, supported by expert recommendations. The course concludes with practical guidance on AMD, including low vision support services and DVLA driving standards.
